We're not allowed to tout for business here. Try www.taxationweb.co.uk
Answer 2 :
I have also worked as an IT Contractor. I can recommend my Accountant, who also set up my Ltd. company for me. I use him because I was recommended him by another IT contractor :-) He's called Mike Lewis. He's based in Cambridge - I'm in West Sussex. I've never met him... I just email him spreadsheets and he does the rest. One reason I like him is that I can also phone him up and ask him odd tax questions and he's always got 5-10 minutes for me without charging. NOTE: This is a personal recommendation. I do NOT receive anything from him for recommending him...

How do I go about paying the tax on the profit I made from the stock market?

How do I go about paying the tax on the profit I made from the stock market?
I've been trading on the stock exchange in America for a few months and I've made a few thousand pound profit from it. How do I go about doing the right thing tax wise? I am a resident in the UK. I would like to do this without the use of an accountant.

Answer 1 :
When you get the 2006/07 tax return, complete the Capital Gains Tax pages, CG1, which is quite easy. If you don't get a return, ask HMRC for one. The tax is due in January 2008 for disposals in 2006/07.
Answer 2 :
Keep all your records. Call Inland revenue and ask for tax return documentation to be sent to you. Have this completed and handed in they will then advise your tax bill and you can just pay. Suggest you do get an accountant involved because these guys will save you money. They know how to be tax efficient, you didn't know how to declare your tax. So reccomend you pay them to compile your return. Its not nearly as expensive as you might think and they are gaurenteed to save you more than they cost.
Answer 3 :
You are better off using an accountant..A good one will only take a percentage of what he saves you..Nice to see someone doing the right thing...
Answer 4 :
If you have only made a few thousand then you do not need to pay capital gains tax as the yearly allowance as of 2006/2007 is 8800 pounds. Any porfits you make over this in that year will be taxed at 40%.

I want to go back to work after 10 year break. How should I start in accountancy?

I want to go back to work after 10 year break. How should I start in accountancy?
I have a career history in finance (10 years in the City followed by 6 years as a finacial journalist). I have been away too long to return to either past careers - even if I wanted to. I thought of retraining as an accountant technician. Which qualification is more useful to start with CAT or AAT?

Answer 1 :
I did AAT when I left college and am now studying CIMA. I found AAT very broad and very useful. Its also more recognised by employers than CAT. AAT gave me a very good grounding on which to base my career. However if you worked in finance for 10 years you may find it too easy and boring?
Answer 2 :
Why don't you volunteer for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), just to stretch out a bit and be a contribution to your community? You'll meet plenty of ex pros.Plus, you'll get a little gas money, about $8/hr. Do it as long as you want, between now and April 15th.

What is the difference between an ACA and an ACCA qualification?

What is the difference between an ACA and an ACCA qualification?
I would like to train as an accountant and have the choice of these two qualifications. Thank you!

Answer 1 :
The ACA isn't as internationally recognized as the ACCA. The ACCA is in over 170 different countries, so I would say it is better... If you are looking to start the ACCA this fall, I would start looking at schools now (since you have to register with the ACCA before the 15th!) There are a lot of schools that offer these types of programs, but I would recommend the London School of Business and Finance the most. The reason is that they combine ACCA with bachelors and master degrees... The ACCA takes 2.5 years - if you do some extra work for the ACCA during one summer, you are able to earn a Bachelors Degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford. Furthermore, if you study 1-1.5 years after finishing the ACCA, you are able to earn a MBA in Financial Services (or any number of other subjects). This way you finish your whole education in about 4 years, and can get into Accounting or Finance (whichever interests you more at that time). And, the whole program (all 4 years) costs less than 1-year of your undergraduate if you go to an American university! Right now they are also giving scholarships away that makes the 14,500GBP MBA program free for students who sign up for the whole 14-papers of the ACCA (or less if they have exemptions). Finally, if you don't want to study in London - you can take the whole program online! I am an official ACCA-based adviser and would be happy to answer any questions you - or anyone else reading this - may have in regards to the ACCA or schools with good programs. You can contact me on both Yahoo! email or messenger. My name on both is thiel_pt_2008

How do I go about setting up business as a bookmaker in the UK?

How do I go about setting up business as a bookmaker in the UK?
Not as a shop but on course ie a turf accountant. What regulatory processes would I have to go through? Are there any minimum amounts of capital I would need?

Answer 1 :
If you are in England, the Gambling Act 2005 creates the power for certain public bodies to issue licences for this. They are: 2 Licensing authorities (1)For the purposes of this Act the following are licensing authorities— (a)in relation to England— (i)a district council, (ii)a county council for a county in which there are no district councils, (iii)a London borough council, (iv)the Common Council of the City of London, and (v)the Council of the Isles of Scilly, For Wales, the Act permits county councils, and county borough councils to issue licences. For Scotland, this Act does not apply. Section 1 of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976 (c. 66) created a licensing board for gambling in Scotland. The amount of capital you would need is hard to put a number on. Remember you may have to pay out vast amounts of money - a good day for the punters could wipe you out if you can't afford to pay up. There is also no requirement in English law to pay out a winning bet. Courts have consistently refused to get involved in betting disputes in England for centuries - the official common law position being that a bet is binding "in honour only" - in other words, if you fail to pay up, your good name is destroyed (possibly your kneecaps too!) Instead, independent arbitrators like the Sporting Life and the Racing Post usually try to settle betting disputes.
