I have a career history in finance (10 years in the City followed by 6 years as a finacial journalist). I have been away too long to return to either past careers - even if I wanted to. I thought of retraining as an accountant technician. Which qualification is more useful to start with CAT or AAT?

I did AAT when I left college and am now studying CIMA. I found AAT very broad and very useful. Its also more recognised by employers than CAT. AAT gave me a very good grounding on which to base my career. However if you worked in finance for 10 years you may find it too easy and boring?

Why don't you volunteer for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), just to stretch out a bit and be a contribution to your community? You'll meet plenty of ex pros.Plus, you'll get a little gas money, about $8/hr. Do it as long as you want, between now and April 15th.
